Rated 5 out of 5 by from Explains the evolution of AI to where we're at now All you hear these days is AI, AI, AI. Turn on CNBC and that's mentioned over and over. Wanting to know more about AI, I watched this course and enjoyed how Patrick Grim explained the origins of AI to where we are at today. It's still a bit complex, but Dr Grim covered different areas of the development of AI. In a changing world, AI is a big part of that, and it was good to learn more about it.

Dr. Grim provides a clear, non-technical overview of the field that gives enough insight into the actual mechanics of AI, without overwhelming complexity. He couples that with a clear delineation of the many historical and philosophic roots of AI and and a good presentation of the ethical and societal implications of this technology. His lecture style is engaging and kept me binging the course. Kudos!

The positive and negative aspects of AI were explored very well.

I had hoped to learn more about how AI works, but I found the descriptions of how AI works to be superficial and a bit garbled. I went online to find much clearer explanations. While the explanation of Darwinian evolution was clear, how this translates to evolutionary algorithms is not. Particularly in the early lectures, the lack of visuals, including limited changes in camera angle, makes it harder to engage with the lecturer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite simply, a very good course This course is well presented and balanced, and Prof Grim deserves praise for his material as well as his presentation. As I write, I haven't seen any of his other courses - mentioned by another reviewer - but I shall seek them out. I do have a small issue, but it does not relate to the presenter or the course itself; it is just that someone at TGC decided to add music arbitrarily at certain points in the lectures for no reason whatsoever., and I found it both unnecessary and inappropriate, indeed a distraction from the presentation itself. Please can you (TGC) reissue the course without this noise? Otherwise, enjoy the course!

In this course, Prof.Grim provides a perfect combination of a relevant (and very interesting) history of the subject and length. Moving into the meat of the topic, rather than a complicated and technical discourse on computing, Prof. Grim provides clear explanations and analogies. With the stated purpose of "understanding AI", I'd grade this course A+.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly great! Originally I thought it is a tech focus course like TGC's Robotics. But this is a course on AI from a philosopher's eye, pretty much not what I expected! I loved the interesection of technology, social sciences, philosophy, cognitive and neurosciences all blended in these lectures to create cohesive view on the subject. I think this is a must-take course for the new year! Thanks TGC for producing this one.

With AI seemingly everywhere, it is crucial to understand how it works.

In Understanding Artificial Intelligence: Of Minds and Machines, philosopher Patrick Grim traces the story of AI from ancient legends to the neural networks behind today’s breakthroughs. You see how modern systems became so powerful so quickly. You also explore what “intelligence” means and how AI achieves its flexibility: massive datasets that let systems learn from examples, deep-learning architectures inspired by the brain, and feedback loops that help models improve. Patrick Grim is Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Stony Brook University and Philosopher in Residence with the Center for the Study of Complex Systems at the University of Michigan. He earned his BPhil from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and his PhD from Boston University. He has published extensively in scholarly journals across a range of disciplines and has received numerous awards for his teaching. His books include The Incomplete Universe, The Philosophical Computer, and Theory of Categories.
